Training the mindSET: Training week 13-17 January 2020

Module: Innovative Teaching Methods

Starting point

In traditional lectures, using a frontal teaching style, lecturers as well as students are often confronted with challenges such as short attention spans, low retention rates or inattentiveness. Innovative teaching methods, face to face and supported by digital media, can provide solutions as activating and student-centred teaching engages students and enhances their learning process.

Aim

The course will focus on the following learning outcomes:

  • Gain an overview of the landscape of face to face (offline) and online teaching and learning methods
  • Know how to design and apply these methods efficiently according to learning outcomes

    Content

    The course provides insights into:

    • Fundamentals of innovative teaching and learning practices (face to face and online)
    • Activating and student-centred teaching and learning methods (face to face and online)
    • Introduction to terminology: e-learning, blended learning, etc.
    • Scenarios and systematics of media-based teaching and learning 
    • Use and application of Audience Response Systems 
    • Teaching with videos (systematics, examples)
    • Online seminars
    • Planning and recording screencasts
    • Individual feedback on own online designs

    Methods

    Short inputs, group work and presentations, discussion, exchange of experience, videos, screencasts, podcasts, online seminars and online research. Participants can bring their own online projects.

    Requirements

    To make yourself familiar with the screencast software that will be used in the course (more information to be given 2 weeks before course).


    Deliverables

    One screencast of a group presentation of a didactic outline for a specific student active teaching-learning activity, presented in an online course no later than 5 weeks after the meeting (date to be decided together with the course leaders), accompanied by a short jointly written report (minimum 2 pages, including arguments, motivations and references).

    All groups will go through a feedback cycle (each group to send and receive feedback on one rough draught of a screencast).

    Each participant will deliver a written reflection (minimun 3 pages) on the course, their learning and teaching activities.
