The academic pitch - Present to the point!

WWB-Area | Learning field

Science communication | Advanced | Present

Starting Point

“So, what do you do?” This could be a simple question, but off-the-cuff it is also infinitely complicated to break down in a brief and compelling way what is familiar and every day to you: your research. Why not use an “academic pitch” to put forward your expertise in an understandable and targeted way, to arouse interest in your research, and maybe even attract third-party funding. In this training we will work out how to get to the heart of what makes you and your research stand out in a concise and memorable way.

  • You will be more aware of what distinguishes you as a person and a scholar.
  • You will be able to explain the content and added value of your research in a concise and memorable way.
  • You will be familiar with the structure of an academic pitch.
  • You will know how to grab the attention of your listeners and how to hold their interest in your pitch.
  • You will benefit from helpful tips that raise your professional profile.

    • Identification of your uniqueness and the high quality of your research
    • Structure of an academic pitch and possible creative elements
    • Extraction of a clear core statement
    • Simple and persuasive language

In practical exercises, you will work out your own academic pitch and have the opportunity to make a presentation followed by individual feedback. Max. number of participants: 10.

Please prepare a self presentation of 1 ½ minutes with the following content:

          • What problem do you solve?
          • What is your expertise?
          • What benefit do you provide with it?
          • Why is this important to you personally?

Student workers are welcome, subject to availability.
