How to Secure External Funding I. Introduction to the National Research Funding Landscape

Starting Point

Today, the acquisition of externally funded projects is of paramount importance for universities. But where do researchers find suitable funding for their ideas and projects? The range of funding and financing options is often as diverse as it is confusing. So where to start looking?

Aim

Participants gain an overview of opportunities for external funding. They acquire basic knowledge of the many different national funding and financing opportunities and learn how to source suitable funds for their research projects.

Content

  • Introduction to external funding: Grants, contracts, co-financing, alternatives to classic research funding such as sponsoring, endowments, etc.
  • Structures, tasks and support measures of central national research funding organizations
  • Overview of the most important national funding lines and programs, with a focus on: The Walter Benjamin Program (German Research Foundation) for postdoctoral researchers
  • Databases and other options for searching for funding, in particular current calls for proposals and funding programs Supervision as a tool for safeguarding good scientific practice

Methods

Lecture, group discussion, work in small groups. Max. number of participants: 15.

Notes

The course is primarily intended for people with little or no prior knowledge who seek an introduction to external funding.

Participants should have English language skills at least the B2 level.

Participants please keep a laptop/ PC with video and audio function or a webcam and headset ready.
