Brilliant project idea - successful proposal? Writing compelling project proposals

WWB-Area | Learning field

Research Management | project planning

Starting Point

A good project idea does not automatically make a successful project proposal. Rather, a whole range of aspects of the proposal submission process determine whether a project is funded or rejected. The better the applicants address these aspects, the better they can sell their ideas and set themselves apart from the mass of competing proposals.

Participants learn what makes a good project proposal and acquire tools to write proposals with high chances of success. They look at requirements and quality criteria as defined e.g. in calls for proposals. They become familiar with proposal elements and learn how to plan, draft and develop them. A particular focus are proposal abstracts, and participants may test themselves in writing an abstract for an own project idea.

  • Session 1: introduction, funding landscape, quality and success criteria, calls for proposals
  • Session 2: working steps and procedures of composing proposals, proposal structure & elements, language & style, introduction to proposal abstracts
  • Session 3: writing exercise: composing a project abstract; giving each other mutual feedback in a group of two
  • Session 4: final analysis of the writing exercise, Q & A

Workshop with online parts and homework, in 4 sessions. Sessions 1, 2 & 4: online, with presentation, discussion, individual & small group exercises. Session 3: homework with individual writing exercise, exchange & mutual feedback in small groups Max. number of participants: 15.

The course is primarily aimed at people with little or no previous knowledge in proposal writing. People with previous experience can systematize and deepen their knowledge. Participants should have a project idea in mind on which they work during the course. They should have English language skills at least the B2 level.
