Visible & influential: networking at conferences & across boundaries and cultures

WWB-Area | Learning field

Research Management | project implementation

Starting Point

As in many professional contexts, knowing the ‘right people’ is increasingly becoming essential to open certain doors. Personal contacts and good networking skills increase chances to win cooperation partners and supporters for one own’s projects, to participate in publications or to become aware of interesting job positions. Establishing a successful researcher career therefore depends to some extent also on the ability to use effectively networking occasions such as conferences and to skillfully build sustainable relationships over time.

Aim

This course helps participants developing networking skills for professional meetings and international conferences. Participants practice for specific academic contexts (team meetings, international conferences, office small talk) and develop strategies to come into contact with senior scientists. They improve their body language, self-marketing skills (pitching) and long-term strategic networking competences. Participants learn how to approach, engage and nurture a relationship with key professional figures so as to become both more visible and influential in their own academic field.

Content

On the first day, participants explore some core issues in two separate sessions (a group in the morning and a group in the afternoon):

  • Highlighting one’s own strengths in the professional field (profiling).
  • Self-marketing: effectively promoting oneself (verbal business cards).
  • Small talk: informal chatting with a purpose.
  • Concise and effective introductions: “pitching yourself”.
  • Body language: do’s and don’ts to come across as confident and reliable.

On the second day, participants meet the trainer through a series of one-to-one meetings to discuss their specific situation, eventual challenges they are facing and possible ways forward to prepare successful applications.

Methods

Role-play and real-life situations, theoretical sessions, hands-on exercises, video: recording and reviewing, group and individual feedback. Max. number of participants: 15.

Notes

The course is targeted at young scientists who wish to boost their networking skills to advance their career prospects or who are interested in making the most of international conferences.
