Effective exams, efficient grading

WWB-Area | Learning field

Teaching and Learning | Advanced teaching module

Starting Point

International teaching staff and teaching staff with international students often feel left alone with testing and assessing student work in English. This workshop offers a platform to discuss general considerations of assessing students‘ written and oral work; participants can reflect their own approaches to assessing and grading, and learn from each other. Applying practical strategies and techniques directly, participants can develop more effective exam formats and contents and get to know strategies and rules to grade more fairly and efficiently.

By the end of the day, participants have

  • discussed standards of good academic work in their disciplines,
  • created feasible connections between their teaching, and exam formats and contents,
  • formulated specific steps to handle their assessment and grading tasks more professionally
  • discussed strategies for time-efficient assessment.

    • Aligning teaching, assignments, and assessment at a German university, especially TU Berlin
    • Testing and assessing: teacher and student responsibilities
    • Preparing and giving more successful oral exams
    • Forms and functions of feedback
    • Making assessing and grading more efficient and effective
    • Rules and regulations of testing and grading for oral and written tests and exams

Trainer input, individual reflection, pair work, plenary discussion, role play, on-the-spot language feedback. Max. number of participants: 12.

Lecturers and other teaching staff who examine and assess student work in English or will do so in the near future.
