Success in Your Doctorate I: Setting out with enthusiasm

WWB-Area | Learning field

Research Management | Success in Your Doctorate

Starting Point

We often set out on a new project with great enthusiasm and doctoral candidates are no different. The initial fascination often wanes, however, when the real work of writing a thesis begins. A doctoral project is an academically demanding, time intensive and complex project and all the challenges you face in this period make it difficult to get going on.

Participants learn how to overcome initial hurdles and to organize, plan, and manage the initial phase of their doctorate with confidence. They acquire key methods of project and self-management as well as strategies for developing a good relationship with their supervising professors. At the end of the course, participants will be able to take on the task of writing a doctoral thesis with confidence and purpose.

  • Stages of a doctorate, doctoral agreement & developing a good relationship with your supervisor
  • Skills analysis: recognizing, developing, and utilizing your strengths and weaknesses
  • Planning the content and organizing your thesis
  • Strategies for academic writing: formulating a question, literature search
  • Time and self-management, motivational strategies
  • How to recognize and avoid typical traps involved in writing a doctoral thesis
  • For international doctoral students: German academic culture(s) and coping with culture shock
