Teaching in English: Online with the English Academic Teaching Style

WWB-Area | Learning field

Teaching and Learning | Advanced teaching module

Starting Point

Teaching in English is not simply teaching in German but using English. Teaching to a culturally diverse audience of primarily mixed-proficiency non-native speakers cannot be equated with teaching a monolingual class of students acclimated to the German system of education. This is especially true when technical concepts have to be taught, and understanding has to be negotiated between teacher and learner. Teaching in this context calls for strategies that can complement any instruction, but that are especially important to facilitate learning when teaching in English.

Goal in the workshop is to demonstrate a preferred English academic style, and to provide insight into its use online. You will learn how to prepare and deliver effective lectures where English serves as the lingua franca, making use of best practices from the science of teaching and learning. You should gain greater confidence teaching in English along with practical techniques to help you teach and your students learn.
