Starting Point

Dissertations and research work - the perfect time for assertion, connection and clarity - both within ourselves and with others.
Work on research i.e. dissertation, many other elements in our everyday life pull us in different ways. Conflicts can swiftly arise, affect our performance, inner stability, and we need our skill sets and resources to hand. Communicating with empathy and respect for boundaries, setting up ground rules, recognising what is achievable, re-negotiating agreements, co-creating understanding help overcome barriers, going forward towards our goals..


Participants can take home guidelines for creating a more even balance between themselves and others during their research work, using reflection, self-appraisal and practice of useful methods and mind-sets for improved communication, reinforcing healthy boundaries.


This course offers practical resources/insights and clarity on how to set boundaries whilst still co-creating connection and understanding during higher education, e.g. dissertation work

  • Empathic skill-sets and how to use them
  • Setting and recognising boundaries - within and without
  • How to hear a no, and also say no with ease
  • Empathy as a factor for success and progress
  • Creating connecting for real, without tricks or manipulation


Short theory inputs, varied group work, discussion plenaries, practical exercises enable a diverse learning experience that allows for fun and insightful learning. Max. number of participants: 12.


This 1-day training is suitable for anyone willing to reflect other own communication skills, learn new tools and practise ways of contributing to a more empathic working and learning environment.

Student workers are welcome, subject to availability.

For employees, assistant lectures, registered doctoral candidates at TU Berlin and junior scientists at HU, FU, Charité, the course is free of charge. If you do not belong to these groups of people, please contact  for information on fees.
Fluent English speaking and reading proficiency is expected.

Participants please keep a laptop with video and audio function or a webcam and headset ready.

Assuming successful participation, you receive a certificate of attendance.
