Creating and Keeping Student Engagement in an Online Seminar or Lecture

Starting Point

If you think back to the teachers that have had the most positive influence on your life, most likely they didn’t simply distribute information, but rather created an environment where you were motivated to learn. Indeed, one of the most challenging tasks as lecturers is to keep students engaged and research shows that when students are engaged, they learn more. Curiosity and developing and following ones own questions can guide students through learning different subjects and support successful study careers.


A particular focus will be on effective questioning techniques and how you can generate participation from even the most reluctant student, regardless of the topic or discipline you teach. Discover and practice a range of critical phrases in English to support you in your role as a lecturer.

Following this workshop participants will know how to deploy a set of useful techniques to cultivate engagement in a seminar or lecture.


    This short online workshop focuses on communication and motivation techniques to engage students and generate more participation in online lectures and seminars. Here you will:

    • Learn how to generate engagement from the beginning of your lecture or seminar
    • Learn the art of effective questioning and thus encourage all student involvement
    • Understand how to give constructive feedback and cultivate a positive environment
    • Be able to understand what a good, small or big 
    • Practice and perfect the art of asking and answering questions
    • Motivate students to create and ask their own questions, guided by feedback


          Participants should come prepared with part of a lecture or teaching scenario they wish to practice and perfect (up to 5 minutes). There will be a short handout available to accompany this workshop. More details will be posted at least 2 weeks before this workshop. Participants will demonstrate their newly learned skills in a role play exercise at the end of the workshop. Max. number of participants: 9.


          This online video training is for anyone who teaches or who is planning to teach online via video in English. Recommended combination with our face-to-face-course “Planning a Seminar or Lecture for an English Speaking Audience” (LM14B) in June 2021.

          Course language
          For employees, assistant lectures, registered doctoral candidates at TU Berlin and junior scientists at HU, FU, Charité, the course is free of charge. If you do not belong to these groups of people, please contact  for information on fees.
          Participants should be able to read technical course material and to discuss their observations in the classroom and concerns about teaching in English.

          Participants are expected to sign up at least two weeks prior to the workshop date in order to be able to complete a preparatory task that will be assigned through ISIS-Moodle (constituting a workload of about two hours). 

          Participants please keep a laptop/ PC with video and audio function or a webcam and headset ready.

          Assuming successful participation, you receive a certificate of attendance.
          Applicable for TU certificate for teaching and learning or TiE-BAC certificate.

          Your binding participation is very important to us. On the one hand, our courses are connected with high costs. On the other hand, we plan much group work and work interactively with you.
