Success in Your Doctorate I: Setting out with enthusiasm

WWB-Area | Learning field

Research Management | Successful Doctorate

Starting Point

"Every beginning has its magic". Many doctoral students start the doctoral period full of euphoria. This initial fascination often fades when concrete work on the dissertation begins. Numerous challenges in this phase make it difficult to actually start working on the doctoral project, which involves highly demanding subject matter, takes a long time, and can become unmanageable in its detail and scope.

Participants are empowered to overcome potential initial barriers and start organizing, planning and managing the starting phase of their doctorate with confidence. They will learn key methods of project and self-management as well as strategies for dealing with supervisors, which will enable them to tackle the first tasks of their doctoral project with self-confidence and determination.

    • PhD phases, PhD agreement & structuring the relationship with the supervisor
    • Motivation strategies
    • Competence analysis: Recognizing, developing and using strengths and weaknesses
    • Content and organizational planning of the dissertation
    • Strategies of scientific work: selection and delimitation of questions, literature research
    • Time- and self-management
    • Recognize & avoid typical challenges in the dissertation process
    • For international doctoral students: German academic culture(s) & dealing with culture shock

Short inputs, individual and small group work on self-reflection, roleplays, peer feedback, experience exchange.
    Max. number of participants: 15.
