Success in Your Doctorate II: Keep Going!

WWB-Area | Learning field

Research Management | Successful Doctorate

Starting Point

Your initial enthusiasm faded some time ago, effort and stress are increasing, first projects haven’t worked out and failures have to be dealt with—the second doctoral phase can often be perceived as endless and unforgiving. Successfully advancing your doctorate increasingly depends on certain soft skills: self-motivation, self-organization, commitment to the day-to-day, and not least iron staying power are now critical to success.

Aim

At the end of the course participants will be freshly prepared to pursue their doctoral project with energy and passion. They will have looked at their strategies, approaches, skills and characteristics, identified strengths, and developed resources that will carry them to the end of their doctoral studies.

Content

  • Reflection on personal working methods: what works, and what needs to be changed?
  • How do I measure my progress, and how do I set goals?
  • Writing, planning, and dealing with writer's block
  • Motivation strategies
  • Pragmatism vs. perfectionism
  • Using networks and mentors
  • Conflicts, boundaries, and self-care

Methods

Short inputs, individual and small group work on self-reflection, roleplays, peer feedback, experience exchange.
Max. number of participants: 15.

Notes
