Student Admissions

The Master's program is designed for maximum 30 students per term and each cohort starts together in the winter term (mid-October). Thus, application to the program is only possible in the spring with a deadline of May 15. The deadline is also published by the TU on their website.

Admissions Requirements

In order to be eligible for the Master's program you have to meet the following requirements (Zugangsvoraussetzungen) as regulated in the Study and Examination Regulations (Studien- und Prüfungsordnung) for the Master Environmental Planning:

  • Undergraduate Degree (Bachelor or Diplom) from a recognized university in one of the following fields:
    • Landscape Planning and Landscape Architecture (Landschaftsplanung und Landschaftsarchitektur)
    • Urban and Regional Planning, Spatial Planning (Stadt- und - Regionalplanung, Raumplanung)
      Geography, Geo Sciences (Geographie, Geowissenschaften)
    • Biology with major in ecology or nature conservation (Biologie mit Schwerpunkt Ökologie oder Naturschutz)
    • Political Sciences with relations to environmental planning (Politikwissenschaften mit Bezügen zur Umweltplanung)
    • or related disciplines

At least basic German language skills are highly recommended as several courses (electives) are not offered in English. However, there is opportunity to expand your German skills throughout the program in university German classes and of course through contact with native speakers within and outside the program.

Application Procedure

Prospective students must use the TU Berlin online application via uni-assist, or if they are already enrolled at TU Berlin, use the application form provided at the website of the TU Master Service Center to apply for the program. The deadline for application for the winter term is May 15. Applications received after this date or applications that are incomplete by this date cannot be considered. The admission process to the Mater Environmental Planning is detailed in the Admission Regulation (Zulassungsordnung).


Applications have to include (§3 Zulassungsordnung):

  • The application form, which is generated during the online application via uni-assist, has to be printed, signed, and submitted together with the following documents:

    • A legalized copy of Bachelor or comparable degree (Testimony and evidence about study period, overall grade and grades for each module - or professional examinations and individual coursework). If applicable, legalized copy of official translation of Bachelor or comparable degree (English, German, or French).
    • English letter of motivation (approx. 1 page DIN-A-4). The motivation letter shall declare specific reasons for the choice of the program and of the place of study, possible goals to further your career, as well as specific personal suitability for the successful completion of the Master Program Environmental Planning (e.g. relevant Courses you took in your previous studies).
    • Where applicable, provide further information that prove additional subject-specific qualifications, e.g. CV, Certificates, and attestations of internships, professional training, time abroad, occupational, and other experience (e.g. working as student assistant with or without teaching activities), non-academic achievements, and qualifications (prizes and awards for student achievement).
    • Proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL internet-based 79 points or equivalent).

  • Additionally provide a legalized copy of your passport (page with personal data) (§5 (4) Zulassungsordnung).

Decision on Admission

Complete applications are reviewed starting after the application deadline is passed, regarding the admissions requirements (undergraduate degree, English skills, if applicable the result of an interview).
