With about 29.500 students, the TU Berlin is one of the largest universities of technology in Germany. One of our most important tasks is to educate our students to meet the challenges of a world increasingly characterized by technology and progress. Our goal, however, is not to simply impart knowledge in order to create innovative ideas, but rather to give our students the ability to recognize relevant societal and economic problems and then to analyze and solve them.

To this end the TU Berlin offers a broad spectrum of 90 academic courses. Our main emphasis is on technologically oriented courses of study such as mathematics, as well as natural and engineering sciences. We offer the broadest spectrum of engineering sciences of any university in Berlin, with our own unique character in terms of our academic profile and subject orientation.

The TU Berlin also offers courses of study in economics and planning sciences, the humanities and social sciences. At the TU Berlin, the humanities and social sciences are closely linked with technology. Our courses also promote hands-on experience, which is underscored by ongoing commitments from well-known firms such as the Deutsche Telekom AG for the Deutsche Telekom Laboratories, and Siemens AG for the Center for Knowledge Interchange. This center helps students to obtain work-study jobs, prepare their dissertations and find traineeship positions.

Transition to the Bachelor/Master degree system

The TU Berlin transformed its entire syllabus into a Bachelors/Masters program to coincide with the winter semester 2007/08. The transition to a Bachelors/Masters program not only required the issuance of new degrees, but comprehensive reorganization of course contents and elaboration of entirely new study courses as well. We are the only university in Germany to offer certain of these innovative programs, e.g. Masters programs in Human Factors and Computational Neuroscience. The TU Berlin’s Bachelor/Master model was structured so as to reflect the university’s research profile in its curriculum.

The contents of the new courses of study have been finely tuned to meet the needs of actual requirements of the workplace. In addition to the professional competencies required by real working environments, we are also committed to imparting social competencies to our students. Practical learning is also strengthened by the close cooperation that exists between the TU Berlin, extramural research facilities and industry, for example in the form of lecture series and practical projects with large companies such as DaimlerChrysler AG and Siemens AG. Such relationships help to reinforce the quality of our students’ diploma theses/dissertations and internships.

Students will also profit from structural improvements being made to our campus: the most attractive rooms in the main building are being converted into a bright service center for students. Under one roof, students will have access to all the information they need ranging from how to enroll to signing up for examinations, as well as information about studying abroad or how to deregister from the university. It is in the university’s interest to make sure that all students have access to the optimal conditions they will need in order to bring their studies to a successful and rapid conclusion. This also applies for top-level student athletes. In the context of a cooperation agreement as a “Partner University for Top-Level Sports” under the aegis of the German University Sport Federation, the Olympic base in Berlin and the Student Union, the university is committed to helping its athletes to successfully obtain their diplomas within the allotted time, despite their active participation in competitive sports.
