Educational Research: How to publish results of teaching and learning experiments on your own teaching

WWB Area | Learning field

Teaching ans Learning | Advanced teaching module

Starting point

Any professor who teaches at a university is experienced as a researcher in his/her own field.  As such they are familiar with scientific methods of knowledge gathering. Yet when it comes to teaching many rely on tradition and intuition. Based on the example of the ‘Scholarship of Teaching’ movement, started in the USA by Ernest Boyer, the course explores possibilities to analyse your own teaching with a scientific attitude.

The objective of the course is to develop experiments aiming to verify the validity of pedagogic interventions, measuring learning outcomes under different conditions and exploring students’ learning experiences with questionnaires and interviews. An academic teacher who sets up a series of such experiments could share the knowledge gained with colleagues by writing an educational publication for a conference or a journal on higher education.

The characteristics of educational research will be explored in a one-day programme. Next, research questions will be formulated aiming to set up experiments to be investigated with your own students. Essentially, this is about a scientific attitude, looking for evidence to back up choices and decisions in the teaching and learning process. The workshop will present methods of applied research in a mixed methods framework.

The workshop will present relevant knowledge on educational research and discuss aspects of research design in the context of classroom research. Participants will focus on formulating their own research questions and select a potential target for writing a short publication.
Max. number of particpants: 16.

This workshop is interesting for professors and teaching staff who would like to understand how pedagogical principles work in practice.

In preparation for the course the participants are asked to write a short review of two educational research papers. A number of suitable papers will be made available
