As part of its policy of internationalization, TU Berlin is seeking to establish a stronger presence in Latin America, particularly in Brazil, and has been actively involved in the German House for Research and Innovation in São Paulo (DWIH-SP) as an associate member since 1.1.2018. In this context vice president Prof. Dr. Angel Ittel visited the German House for Research and Development in summer 2017 to meet with the team there as well as representatives of the various member institutes.
The DWIH model was developed as part of the internationalization policy of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA) and the Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and envisages Germany as a center of research represented at five strategic locations worldwide, providing a forum for international scientific cooperation.
Due to its position as Brazil’s most powerful economic region and the strong presence of German companies and institutes in the area, São Paulo represents an attractive choice as a springboard for developing cooperation in South America.
DWIH-SP has been acting as an umbrella organization since 2009, seeking to strengthen synergies between Brazilian and German stakeholders from the areas of education, research and science, thus consolidating more than 40 years of research cooperation between the two countries.
The presence of Freie Universität Berlin among the eight full members of DWIH-SP (German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), German Research Foundation (DFG), Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Technical University of Munich, Freie Universität Berlin, WWU Münster, UAS7 Alliance of German Universities of Applied Sciences, UA Ruhr) provides TU Berlin with a regional partner in this venture, thus strengthening the process of joint international cooperation. As part of this process, a joint presentation of Berlin as a center of research is planned, as are events and workshops focusing on study and research in the German capital as well as networking events to bring together mutual regional partners. The strengthening of TU Berlin’s presence in São Paulo also creates an excellent opportunity for researchers from all over Latin America, while providing TU Berlin researchers with the chance to receive detailed information and advice concerning cooperation and financing opportunities relevant to their own areas of interest.
