Faculty III unites six departments that fall under the umbrella of “Resource efficiency of processes and products”. The faculty offers a unique higher education opportunity by combining several subject areas such as the life sciences, energy and process engineering (including environmental protection), and the interdisciplinary field of materials science.
Using the basic principles from natural sciences and engineering, we study the transformation and transport of energy and materials through physical, chemical and biological processes. We then apply this to biotechnology and food technology, energy and process engineering, technical environmental protection and materials technology.
The faculty is in charge of three former sectors of the TU Berlin: Energy, Water and Health. The graphs below show how the departments of Faculty III make up the core topics defined by the TU Berlin in 2013. We can clearly see the faculty’s focal points: all departments of Faculty III (for all subject areas) work in the field of “Energy Systems and Sustainable Resource Management”, and two-thirds work in the fields of “Human Health” and “Materials, Design and Manufacturing”. This highlights the central focus of the faculty - resource efficiency.
The faculty is part of the Cluster of Excellence “Unifying Concepts in Catalysis” (UniCat) and is involved in several research areas across multiple disciplines. The faculty is also the main coordinator and spokesperson for the DFG Collaborative Research Centers, “Integrated chemical processes in liquid multiphase systems (InPROMPT)” and “TurbIn - Substantial efficiency increase in gas turbines through use of unsteady combustion and flow dynamics”.
