Associated Research Projects at the Center for Research on Anti-Semitism

In addition to the projects of the scholars participating in the Research Group “Hate Pictures”, the following research projects will be implemented at the Center for Research on Anti-Semitism:

Within the framework of his professorship, Uffa Jensen will be teaching and researching extensively on the visual and emotional aspects of anti-Semitism. On that account, he will be working closely with the Langerman Collection. Jensen’s activities will form an integral part of a substantial theoretical and methodological reorientation of the Center for Research on Anti-Semitism’s work.

A transnationally comparative research project focusing on both, the history and processes of production, control and transfer of anti-Semitic images and emotions is currently being planned. This project is designed to include post-doctoral and doctoral positions. It will be closely linked to the investigations of the Research Group “Hate Pictures” and the activities of Uffa Jensen, who will be acting as supervisor to the PhD candidates. The various sub-projects will focus on different parts of the Langerman Collection and will thus undertake a first systematization of this hitherto barely explored source body.

The Langerman Collection is to be made accessible to students, PhD candidates and international researchers through the creation of a digital archive and access point at the Center for Research on Anti-Semitism. The digitization process, which is being carried out in Belgium on the initiative of Mr. Langerman, has already started and is expected to be finalized by the end of 2018. For the collection’s subsequent structuring and systematization, the work of the Research Group “Hate Pictures” and the associated research projects is of vital importance. By examining, researching and providing access to the collection, the Center for Research on Anti-Semitism is fulfilling its part of the cooperation agreement with the collector Arthur Langerman, who wishes to make his collection the basis of international scientific research and historical, pedagogical and educational initiatives. In accordance with the Research Group “Hate Pictures”, the Center for Research on Anti-Semitism will therefore develop appropriate concepts for the presentation and use of these highly sensitive images and will serve as contact and consultation point for museums and memorial sites.
