Doctoral Degree

The conferral of a doctorate (German: Promotion) is the acquisition of the doctoral degree at a university in the context of an examination procedure that is determined in combined doctorate regulations within all faculties at TU Berlin. The formal condition for the conferral of a doctorate is an academic degree (diploma, master’s degree, graduate degree, state examination) in the field of the respective doctoral degree. Content conditions are the successful preparation of a research paper (German: Dissertation) and a passed oral exam (PhD defense).

In the case of an obtained university degree not pertained to the field of the doctoral degree, or a university degree obtained in a foreign country, further exams may be required. To be sure to clear all questions on the part of the doctoral candidate and to discuss all requirements ahead of time, the doctorate regulations provide registration of the notice of intent. The faculty decides whether to accept or reject the notice of intent and assesses possible additional exams. Diploma or master degree holders of a university of applied sciences (German: Fachhochschule) have the chance to be accepted, too, in the case of above average grades (in the German grading system at least “good”) and successfully passed assessment tests.

For diploma graduates from universities of applied sciences and for the admission to the conferral of a doctorate with a bachelor’s degree, different regulations apply (please view § 3 (2) and (3) PromO).

Since April 16, 2008, new doctorate regulations are valid at TU Berlin which have been modified ever since. An abridged reading version of the regulations for the conferral of a doctorate can be found here.

Our newsletter gives information on the first steps of the conferral of a doctorate.
