The habilitation qualifies to teach at a university. Especially for scientists, who ponder the idea of pursuing a career in higher education the habilitation is of special meaning, because it is the traditional qualification for an employment as a professor at a university. But since the law on higher education was changed (e.g. for the introduction of junior professors), the habilitation is no longer a regulation condition for a career in higher education as a professor. At this point it is still too early to give an outlook on habilitations and if they may become less important in the future.

Habilitations are obtained through an examination procedure. The formal conditions for a habilitation are an academic and doctoral degree. Content conditions are adequate achievements in teaching (proven by independent teaching activities) and in research (proven by an extensive monograph or already publicized research results). Habilitated scientists can request the license to teach and get the status as an associate professor.  Associate professors are obligated to hold seminars regularly without payment. The mandatory course load is 2 courses per year. As associate professor you have membership rights at the university and also get the right to cooperate in the academic self-administration, in examination procedures, and in the use of university facilities.
