Teaching portfolio - an important part of your application

The TU Berlin has high standards for the quality of teaching! It provides targeted support for innovations and developments in teaching that facilitate effective learning. In addition to your research profile, your teaching portfolio is therefore an important component in appointment procedures at our university. By looking at the description of your personal teaching portfolio, we want to learn about your teaching skills as well as your teaching personality.

The structure of the teaching portfolio

The teaching portfolio can be given a very individual character. The appointment committee will thus be able to assess your teaching properly. This helps the appointment committee with the individual evaluation of your teaching personality. Nevertheless, in the appointment process the evaluation of your teaching skills should be transparent and criteria-based. We know that candidates from outside the university (for examples in industry) can usually demonstrate only a limited amount of teaching experience. We this take into account in the appointment process. Nevertheless, we also want this group of applicants to have thought about university teaching and documented their understanding of and approach to teaching in a portfolio.
The following elements should be included in your teaching portfolio:

  1. Teaching philosophy / approach to teaching - structure and foundation of your own concept of teaching (didactic principles, objectives in teaching, understanding of students as learners, and teaching methodologies).
  2. Own teaching practice - description of the implementation of the teaching philosophy with concrete examples (teaching experience, scope of teaching, teaching requirements, teaching formats, feedback methods).
  3. Other activities related to teaching - documentation of participation in teaching bodies, the curriculum design and study programs, didactic training.
  4. Overview of priorities for future teaching activities.
  5. Important documents and material as attachments (for example courses taught, results of student course reviews, max. 20 pages).

If you have little or no teaching experience, the priorities should be on the points 1 and 4.
Please do not enclose original documents in your portfolio. The TU Berlin cannot accept any liability should they be lost.
