Conference on Internationalizing the Curricula in STEM Subjects (ICM)

Internationalization at German universities is no longer limited to student and scientist mobility or research with international partners. Instead, it is understood as an integrative element of all areas of the university. In connection with advancing globalization, the internationalization of all teaching curricula is in the focus.

The German Rectors' Conference (HRK) general assembly adopted a recommendation in May 2017 that aims to make international dimensions a fixed point in all curricula. A change in the culture of all levels of organization from the university management to lecturers, students, and the administration is necessary to create the basis for high-quality teaching. The conscious integration of a global perspective in teaching and learning content is to support the development of critical awareness and anchor openness, interculturality, and multilingualism as factors in educating students for the global job market (global citizenship).

The Conference is being hosted in cooperation with the HRK, TU9, and DAAD at the Technische Universität Berlin (TUB) and is intended for lecturers and researchers, administration employees, and interested students. Other participating institutions include the Central Institution for Scientific Continuing Education and Cooperation (ZEWK) at the TUB and the Berlin Centre for Higher Education (BZHL). The focus is on illuminating the topic from the perspective of the technical subject areas. How can international learning contents be integrated and conveyed in the STEM subjects and especially in engineering? Which methods are best suited for reaching the desired level of internationalization in teaching? Which standards help in evaluations? How can the necessary cultural change be initiated in an institution? Which additional opportunities can open up for a university through the process of internationalizing the curricula?

The following formats are welcome as conference contributions: Reports on successfully integrated internationalization concepts in individual study modules or entire curricula, interactive workshops on selected topics, speeches, or short presentations with discussions. The contributions can consider one or more of the following topics in relation to the 5 dimensions of internationalizing curricula:


  • Language requirements and proof for international programs
  • Foreign language courses
  • Subject-specific language courses
  • Language policies (systematic selection of language offerings)


  • Integration of opportunities to obtain intercultural competences
  • Networking offers for university members interested in intercultural topics
  • Organizational culture change for successful internationalization of the curricula


  • Internationalization of the curricula in the STEM subjects and engineering as well as in natural science disciplines with an option for a state-certified teacher education
  • International recruiting, appointing international visiting scientists and professors, strategies for international appointments
  • Studies on “employability” of graduates in engineering and natural sciences and the employer perspective in relation to international experience


  • Accreditation of international degree programs
  • Conditions for an international curriculum
  • Integration of time windows for stays abroad in the curriculum (e.g. for research projects or internships abroad)
  • Application and admission procedure
  • Developing continuing education measures for administrative personnel for international degree programs
  •  Designing an international curriculum
  • Learning and qualification objectives
  • Double degree programs


  • Divers methods in credit certificates
  • Development of newer and more flexible teaching and learning formats through digital learning (e.g. blended learning, internationalization@home, virtual international classroom)
  • Mobility of instructors, lecturers (e.g. short-term lecturers - incoming and outgoing), and administrative personnel
  • Setting up summer and winter schools
  • Setting up student conferences with lecturers from abroad
  • Using international teaching materials, e.g. including international research findings
  • Integration of English-language literature
  • Teaching-learning methods that activate international students
  • Intercultural training to prepare lecturers for teaching in international curricula / degree programs and managing multicultural learning groups

Please send your contribution proposals (250-300 words) for a report (15-30 minutes), an interactive workshop that you moderate (> 90min), a speech (30 min), or a 15-minutes presentation with a discussion by September 15, 2017 to Anja Meyer ). You can find the proposal template and other information on the conference online at: www.icm-2018.com. Your contribution will be reviewed by an expert committee. You will receive notification as to whether your contribution was accepted for presentation by October 9, 2017. Selected contributions will likely be published at a later date. Starting on October 12, 2017, the online registration system will be opened on the event website.
