Cognitive Engineering

Overview

This course gives students an introduction to Cognitive Engineering - the study of human-computer interaction, systems engineering and psychology. Participants will learn about improving the fit between humans and the systems that they operate.  

Using a hands-on approach, students will work on their own research projects to investigate the usability of some everyday (digital) objects by forming ideas which will be generated and discussed within the group.

Key topics are usability testing, research methods (quantitative and qualitative), and experimental design.  The learned methods will be directly integrated into the project and their potential benefits and limitations will be analysed, together with their applicability to the group projects.

Participants will also gain insight into the topics of automation, artificial intelligence and robots in the context of social and ethical issues and will discuss possible future implications. 

Students will be introduced to key aspects of project management and how they can apply the knowledge gained in their own group work and present their ideas at the end of the course.

Learning Goals

  • Introduction to design and key elements of cognitive engineering (human perception and performance, design principles, and trust in automation)
  • Learn about human information processing, action selection and their respective limitations
  • Get to know and use common methods for analyzing and optimizing typical human-factor problems 
  • Understand and apply evaluation methods for human-machine-interaction in the context of user-centered design

 

Course Structure:

Reading week: June 28th - July 2nd, 2021. Flexible, 5 hours preparatory work to be done on-demand.

Online course: July 5th - July 16th, 2021. Estimated session times are Mondays through Fridays from 9 am to 2 pm CET for live lectures and group sessions, etc.

Please note this is a full-time, intensive course. Weeks 1 and 2 will involve approximately 30 hours of workload.

    Target Audience

    This course is designed for current university students, working professionals and any individuals wanting to learn about typical challenges in human-automation interaction.

    Participants from all fields and disciplines are welcome.

    Prerequisites and Technical Requirements

    Participants of the TU Berlin Summer & Winter University must meet the following requirements: (i) B2 level English, or equivalent and (ii) at least one year of university experience. Working professionals are also welcome to take part in the program.

    Technical Requirements

    We will ask participants to fulfill the following technical requirements:

    • Fully functional device (laptop, tablet, PC)
    • Stable internet connection
    • Software: Zoom (App installed on desktop or over browser. Participants are requested to use their real name as zoom account name)
    • Recommended: external headset for better sound quality

    Lecturer(s)

    Tobias Rieger and Eileen Roesler are lecturers and researchers at the Chair of Work, Engineering, and Organizational Psychology at Technische Universität Berlin. In both teaching and research, the lecturers engage in the field of human-automation-interaction.

    Tobias Rieger’s research focus lays on mechanisms of human information processing in both fundamental research as well as complex human-automation interaction.

    Eileen Roesler’s research focuses on human-robot-interaction in multiple application domains, such as industrial, private, and commercial service.

    Course fees

    Course fees for Cognitive Engineering are as follows:

    Student: 720 Euro

    Working professional/Non-student: 1120 Euro

    The early bird discount is available for all participants until April 1st 2021.
