Overview
The course includes a theoretical introduction for the conversion of renewable energies and design of desalination technologies. The participants will work on case studies in teams on a specific technology combination. The results will be presented in teams and discussed with all participants.
Learning Goals & Syllabus
Learning Goals:
Upon completion of the course students should be able:
- To understand how the conversion of renewable energies like wind power or sunlight takes place in wind power plants, photovoltaic cells (PV) or concentrating solar systems
- To understand technical solutions for seawater desalination systems, in specific reverse osmosis (RO) technology
- To analyze economic and environmental boundary conditions of the specific selected site
- To dimension a PV system and know its components
- To dimension a wind power plant and know its components
- To dimension a RO unit to desalinate water
Course Structure:
Reading week: June 28th - July 2nd, 2021. Flexible, 5 hours preparatory work to be done on-demand.
Online course: July 5th - July 16th, 2021. Estimated session times are Mondays through Fridays from 9 am to 2 pm CET for live lectures and group sessions, etc.

Please note this is a full-time, intensive course. Weeks 1 and 2 will involve approximately 30 hours of workload.

You may find the syllabus useful when discussing with your home university whether the ECTS credits attainable for this course are accepted by them.
Target Audience
This course is designed for current university students, working professionals and any individuals with an interest in learning about the conversion of renewable energies and desalination technologies.
Participants from all fields and disciplines are welcome.
Prerequisites and Technical Requirements
Participants of the TU Berlin Summer & Winter University must meet the following requirements: (i) B2 level English, or equivalent and (ii) at least one year of university experience. Working professionals are also welcome to take part in the program.
The course requires that you have basic knowledge in mechanical, electrical or power engineering. Students of water and environmental sciences are welcome to apply.
Technical Requirements
We will ask participants to fulfill the following technical requirements:
- Fully functional device (laptop, tablet, PC)
- Stable internet connection
- Software: Zoom (App installed on desktop or over browser. Participants are requested to use their real name as zoom account name)
- Recommended: external headset for better sound quality
Lecturer(s)
Dr.-Ing. Gesine Götz is a research assistant and lecturer at the Chair of Environmental Process Engineering in the Technical University of Berlin.
Her research interests lie in the field of waste water recycling in the beverage and textile industry, recovery of valuable materials from waste water as well as optimization of membrane separation processes.
Dr.-Ing. Johannes Wellmann is a research assistant and lecturer at the Chair of Environmental Process Engineering in the Technical University of Berlin.
His research interests lie in the area of concentrate treatment from water treatment plants, renewable energy and seawater desalination, concentrating solar power plants (CSP), thermal desalination plants as well as zero Liquid Discharge.
Course fees
Course fees for Renewable Energies and Desalination are as follows:
Student: 720 Euro
Working professional/Non-student: 1120 Euro
The early bird discount is available for all participants until April 1st 2021.
