Overview

The course covers the fundamentals and typical applications of acoustics, such as product noise control and sound quality, room acoustics, and psychoacoustics. It is conceptualized as an introductory course to engineering acoustics, providing an overview of the most common theoretical and experimental methods with the special emphasis on practical work and acoustic measurements. The students will have an opportunity to work in a well-equipped acoustic laboratory and to be actively involved in the measurements. In the end of the course, the students will be encouraged to implement the obtained skills by working on a small acoustic project and documenting it in a report.

Learning Goals and Syllabus

Goals:

The students will learn the concepts of general acoustics, as well as common methods for

- machinery and vehicle noise control,

- product sound quality and sound design,

- room acoustics and sound insulation,

- psychoacoustics,

- effects of noise on humans health.

After familiarizing themselves with the basic acoustic quantities, the students will collect experience in engineering acoustics and psychoacoustics through the guided exercises and their own work in the acoustic laboratory

Syllabus:

Prerequisites

The general prerequisites of the TU Berlin Summer University are the following: at least one year of university experience + English level B2 or equivalent.

Understanding of basic calculus is recommended.

Lecturers

Ennes Sarradj is a professor of engineering acoustics at the Technical University of Berlin. He has more than 25 years of professional experience both as a researcher in the field of acoustics and noise control, and as an acoustic consultant. He holds a doctorate from the Technical University of Dresden. His research interests include noise control at the source, aeroacoustics, structure-borne sound, and acoustic measurement techniques. Since 1998, he has given university courses on a variety of acoustic subjects such as engineering acoustics, noise control, acoustic measurements, and numerical methods in acoustics at several universities. Currently he serves as a review board member of the German Research Foundation and as a member of the board of the German Acoustical Society.

André Fiebig is a visiting professor at the Department of Engineering Acoustics of the Technical University of Berlin. He worked for more than 13 years in industry, dealing with numerous product sound quality and sound design applications. He also contributed to several international research projects investigating the impact of environmental noise on humans. He is involved in several standardization working groups concerned with noise issues, chairs the technical committee of noise in the German Acoustical Society, and is a board member of I-INCE. Since January 2019 he is teaching psychoacoustics, community noise and noise effects.

Drasko Masovic is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Engineering Acoustics (Technical University of Berlin). He finished the doctoral studies at the University of Belgrade and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. He worked as a researcher at the University of Belgrade and the Virtual Vehicle Research Centre in Graz, as well as a part-time lecturer at the international SAE Institute. His fields of expertise include room and building acoustics, aeroacoustics and flow acoustics, and physical acoustics.
