IoT meets Biodiversity in Berlin

Summer University Term 1: June 11th - July 5th, 2019




Course price: 1,950 Euros

18 hours of class per week, 5 ECTS credit points, max. 20 participants

Berlin is Europe’s no. 1 Tech Hub. The German capital is thriving towards one of the smartest cities globally through initiatives such as ‘be-digital-Berlin’. It follows a roadmap that includes fostering e-mobility and the Internet of Things (IoT) as well as strengthening biodiversity. New urban gardens that are housing animals, insects and plants have complemented Berlin’s green city forests like Tiergarten, Humboldthain and Friedrichshain with total area of 32,6%.

In times of urban transformation the question to be asked is wheather we really understand the new natural-digital ecology, the relationship between our natural and digital urban environment?

During this course, we will try to answer this question by focusing on IoT and building intelligent IoT-eco-components for the city.

Learning Goals and Syllabus


Our goal is to use the Internet of Things to understand and enhance biodiversity, the natural environment and the habitats of birds and other little creatures on our selected sites.

Part 1: ‘Mapping and Networking’: Field work, impulse lectures, skill development

Learning Outcomes

Upon course completion students should have developed an approach to research and engage with the challenges of a city in digital transformation. Course participants should acquire basic programming knowledge and an experience of interdisciplinary work. Students shall also become familiar with the IoT and the strategies of exploring, observing and documenting the complexity of Berlin’s urban environment. Each student will build a small component that works with nature and the digital.


The general prerequisites of the TU Berlin Summer University are the following: at least one year of university experience + English level B2 or equivalent.

Preference for the IoT course shall be given to students with Bachelor level in architecture or design. Experience with data-collection and sensors is an advantage. Willingness to team work is a must.

Students are also asked to bring their own laptops in class.


Liss C. Werner, licensed architect, director of Tactile Architecture – Office für Systemarchitektur, is Assistant Professor in the chair of Sustainable Urban Planning and Design at TU Berlin, where she founded the research unit ‘CyPhyLab’.

Her work defines architecture as a cybernetic discipline between technology, humans and nature as socio-ecological system.

Werner taught at DIA Dessau and Nottingham University, lectured at MIT, CalArts, USC, Texas Tech, The Bartlett, Syracuse University, Cooper Union, Nottingham Trent University, Kassel University, Linz, University Innsbruck and other schools, exhibited at Tongji University and the Venice Biennale.

She acted as visiting Professor at Carnegie Mellon University (2012) and Taylor’s University, Malaysia (2014-2016).

Ana Zatezalo Schenk, founder of Sinestezia with offices in Berlin and Belgrade, co-director of Animalesque, has held teaching positions at Columbia University and at the Architecture University in Belgrade before acting as Assistant Professor at Technical University in Brunswick, Germany.

Zetazelo Schenk has organized a number of conferences and lectures aiming to combine living matter and architecture such as City on Water (2010), Waterfronts (2011), Hortitecture (2015), Bio Berlin (2016).

From 2007 to 2010, she was Director of Belgrade waterfront development responsible for the 150 Ha Masterplan at the Port of Belgrade, working closely with Daniel Libeskind Architects, ARUP and Gehl Architects.

Over the past 10 years Zatezalo Schenk's work has been focusing on sinaesthesia (sinaestetic principles), supporting through design an empathic world sensitive to life, nature and animals.
