Advanced German for Chinese Speakers

This is an advanced German language program being offered in collaboration with the Center for Cultural Studies on Science and Technology in China at the TU Berlin. This course is open only to native Chinese speakers with prior knowledge of German language, equivalent to the level of B2-C1 (CEFR) or Test DaF 14-16. The course language is German.

Highlights of the course

- Expand your verbal and written German language skills through discussion and class work on a range of interesting current topics

- Gain valuable insights into Germany's economy, scientific research and institutions, along with facts about Berlin and German culture

- Develop practical knowledge and skills based on visits to companies in Berlin

- Participate in Chinese-German exchange and intercultural meetings in the Center for Cultural Studies on Science and Technology in China.

The course will be taught by an experienced lecturer in cooperation with the Center for Cultural Studies on Science and Technology in China.

Please note that the course language will be German.

Course Components

1) German Language Course - Aproximately 18 hours per week

1.1 Discussion and activities in class covering a range of broad themes, designed to further your German language skills

2) Cultural program with the China Center

2.4 ALBA Day: Recycling & Basketball

2.1 Combining Tourism and  the history of technology

Participants will board a 110 year-old steam boat from part of Potsdam's "White Fleet", from which they will visit rivers and lakes in the Potsdam area. A special program will accompany the trip, providing students with insights into the technological motivation, costs and problems of the fleet. 

2.2 Discover Berlin by bicycle and foot!

Berlin is packed with history, culture and technology. Join us on this Berlin Tour and get a taste of what this city is all about. We will visit many famous landmarks including the Brandenburg Gate and the Berlin Wall, as well as sites relevant to the history of technology in Berlin.

2.3 From old backyards to the New Palace: A Glimpse of Berlin history 

This tour through historic Berlin showcases typical backyards, the old and new of Jewish daily life; Clärchens Ballhaus - the most famous dancing floor in Berlin; and the Museum Island - a UNESCO World Heritage site. We'll pass by the home of Chancellor Angela Merkel, and finalize the tour with a view of Berlin’s “New-Old” Palace. Additionally, we'll learn how Berlin's mobility evolved over the last couple of centuries: from horse-drawn carriages to city trains and freight shipping.

2.4 ALBA Day: Recycling & Basketball

ALBA Group is one of the world's leading recycling and environmental services companies, as well as raw material providers. With its two brands - ALBA and Interseroh - and a total of about 7,500 employees, ALBA Group operates within Germany, Europe and Asia. The ALBA BERLIN basketball team was founded in 1989 and is currently playing in its 28th season. Eight German league titles, nine German cups and the Korac Cup in 1995 are the outcome of 28 years in which the "Albatrosses" played in a European competition and took part in the German playoffs. Get to know the recycling company and basketball club during our one special ALBA day!

Prerequisites

- B2-C1 level German (CEFR) or Test DaF 14-16 (course language is German)

- At least one year of university experience

- Please note that this course is part of a range of summer schools offered by the TU Berlin Summer & Winter University. Although English language competence is not specifically required for this course, all communications related to the program and all cultural activties beyond the specific activities outlined above, will be conducted in English. Please take this into consideration when you enrol!

Lecturer

Barbara Ziesch

Barbara Ziesch has been teaching German throughout China for several years. She was head of Language Management between 2008 and 2011 at the Goethe Institute Beijing and DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) lecturer between 2012 and 2017 at the Chinese German College of Higher Education. At the Tongji University Shanghai she was head of the department in charge of German language teaching, intercultural language courses and Test DaF preparation
