Theory & Computation of Composite Materials

Overview

Learn the theory of elasticity for composite materials used in lightweight structures such as airplanes, race cars, laptop covers. Write your own code and simulate deformation in composite materials. Work on solving engineering problems in elasticity in a small team.

Learning Goals and Syllabus

Goals

The emphasis of this course is on a theoretical understanding of problems in continuum mechanics, especially elasticity of composite materials.
Participants will understand elasticity theory, laminate theory, and apply it by solving various engineering examples with open-source codes in Python.

Course components

Lecture topics: composite materials, manufacturing of composites, tensor algebra, theory of elasticity, laminate theory, anisotropy, analytical solution of simple structures, continuum mechanics, finite element method, Python.

Prerequisites

The general prerequisites of the TU Berlin Summer University are the following: at least one year of university experience + English level B2 or equivalent.

To participate in the Theory & Computation of Composite Materials Course you should have completed one or two of the following courses (it is not essential to have done all of them!):

  • Introduction to Solid Mechanics
  • Mechanics of Materials
  • Differential Equations
  • Linear Algebra
  • Programming Methodology (or worked with any programming language)

Lecturer(s)

Dr.-Ing. Bilen Emek Abali is currently engaged as a postdoctoral associate at the Technical University of Berlin.

As a consequence of working and lecturing in several continents, he has obtained a rigorous scientific and teaching expertise over the years. Among others, he has sponsored courses in mechanics, composite materials, numerical methods, and multiphysics simulations.

His first research monograph has been published in Springer entitled as Computational Reality, presenting thermodynamical derivation of coupled phenomena involving thermomechanics with electromagnetism in solid bodies and fluids as well as their computation via the finite element method with the aid of open-source codes developed under the FEniCS project.

He previously served as a researcher and lecturer in the Technical University of Munich, the Turkish-German University in Istanbul as well as the University of California in Berkeley.

Prof. Dr. Christina Völlmecke worked as a researcher and lecturer in various institutes, including the Technical University of Berlin, Imperial College London, and University of Kassel.
