Summer University Term 4: August 17th - August 28th, 2020

Course price: 950 Euros

22 hours of class per week, 3 ECTS credit points, max. 20 participants

This course introduces to the emerging topic of Circular Economy in a trans-disciplinary way and allows students to design their own circular prototypes. With climate change starting to surface more rigorously, the principles of Circular Economy become ever more important. The focus will be specifically on urban resource flows such as water, energy, materials, food, and waste because the way in which we manage the resources consumed and produced in cities will significantly reduce the consumption of finite resources globally. Berlin and its accompanying socio-economic processes will serve as a testbed to ask the question: how can we live more sustainably by introducing circular urban systems?

We offer an introduction to Circular Economy out of the perspective of different fields such as built environment, food & biomass, textile & fashion, and materials & products. In the second phase, students will apply the gained knowledge to prototype circular solutions with the city of Berlin as a case study. The goal is to get a profound understanding of Circular Economy and to co-create ideas for circular solutions to surface the potentials for a transformation towards a sustainable urban environment.

The course will give a general introduction to Circular Economy, will present a wide range of best-practices, will give an insight into current practices through field visits and will introduce the students to the lecturer’s current research.

Learning Goals and Syllabus
