Desalination & Renewable Energies

Summer University Term 4: August 19th - August 30th, 2019


Course price: 950 Euros

22 hours of class per week, 3 ECTS credit points, max. 20 participants

Due to the challenges of the climate change as well as energy and water scarcity, the development of advanced technical solutions under specific local boundary conditions becomes urgently necessary. The chair of environmental process engineering offers a new course focusing on sustainable solutions for energy generation and water desalination based on economic, ecologic and social dimension which has been developed with Jordanian and Tunisian universities. In addition, aspects and challenges in terms of integrated water resource management (IWRM), supply and demand, water quality and reuse are discussed.

The course includes a theoretical introduction for the conversion of renewable energies and design of desalination technologies. The participants will work on case studies in teams on a specific technology combination. They will conduct an own membrane experiment in the laboratory to find out parameters needed for the design of the desalination unit. The results will be presented in teams and discussed with all participants.

Learning Goals and Syllabus


Upon completion of the course students should be able:

  • To understand how the conversion of renewable energies like wind power or sunlight takes place in wind power plants, photovoltaic cells (PV) or concentrating solar systems
  • To understand technical solutions for seawater desalination systems, in specific reverse osmosis (RO) technology
  • To analyze economic and environmental boundary conditions of the specific selected site
  • To dimension a PV system and know its components
  • To dimension a wind power plant and know its components
  • To dimension a RO unit to desalinate water

Course components

Lectures (1 LP):

  • Introduction to RE technologies like PV, Wind, CSP, Biomass
  • Introduction to desalination technology, salt chemistry, water & salt balances (incl. ion balances), water quality
  • Hybridization options, combinations, cogeneration  

Exercises (1 LP):

  • Design and calculation of RO, concentration of sea water by RO and evaporation

Laboratory (1 LP):

  • Desalination of a sodium chloride solution with an initial concentration of 1 wt % by reverse osmosis in pilot-scale
  • Determination and calculation of relevant operating parameters used for the design of an large-scale desalination unit (case study)
  • Duration of experiment: 4 hours
  • Number of students per group: max. 5


The general prerequisites of the TU Berlin Summer University are the following: at least one year of university experience + English level B2 or equivalent.

The course requires that you hold a Bachelor degree in mechanical, electrical or power engineering. Students of water and environmental sciences are welcome to apply.

Due to the experimental work, laboratory or workshop experience is advantageous.


Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sven-Uwe Geissen is a Head of Chair of Environmental Process Engineering in the Technical University of Berlin.

He started his activities in the MENA region more than 20 years ago when he initiated and coordinated a project in the EU-Avicenne initiative. Meanwhile he has successfully completed or applied for many projects with colleagues from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan.

His research interests are industrial water treatment, management, and reuse.

Dr.-Ing. Gesine Götz is a research assistant and lecturer at the Chair of Environmental Process Engineering in the Technical University of Berlin.

Her research interests lie in the field of waste water recycling in the beverage and textile industry, recovery of valuable materials from waste water as well as optimization of membrane separation processes.

Dr.-Ing. Johannes Wellmann is a research assistant and lecturer at the Chair of Environmental Process Engineering in the Technical University of Berlin.

His research interests lie in the area of concentrate treatment from water treatment plants, renewable energy and seawater desalination, concentrating solar power plants (CSP), thermal desalination plants as well as zero Liquid Discharge.
