Cities around the world face rapid changes in their transportation systems with the advances in ICTs. Recent trends include on-demand and shared mobility-modes and automation in public and private transportation systems; these new solutions impact transport industry, infrastructures management as well as political agenda. Focusing on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), new “Smart Mobility” system and real-time network management have been developed as potential solutions to mitigate congestion issues and improve network efficiency.
This 2-week program will bring a general overview about sustainable and smart transportation in the future smart cities in terms of i) industry trends, business models, technical and urban design aspects. Based on different European case studies especially in Germany, this program participants will get to know innovative methods to deal with Smart cities current and future solutions.
The course combines theoretical and practical learning materials for transportation modelling and simulation techniques, with a focus on Smart Mobility and ITS solutions and real-world applications.
Participants will review the most well-known traffic simulation models, learn about demand forecasting methods, business, social and political issues and related analytical techniques.
Moreover students will gain insight into the concept of the smart mobilities and how their business models could grow as well as look into same case studies and visit German urban transport companies and startups. These excursions provide practical insight into the actual best practices and challenges for smart urban transportation systems in European cities such as Berlin.
Learning Goals and Syllabus
Students will gain the knowledge and analytical skills in the fields of:
· Transport trends and futures (Megatrends)
· new social behaviors and innovative agendas, including sustainability goals
· Intelligence Transport systems (ITS) and Smart mobility modes
· Modeling and simulation approaches for future mobility
· Forecasting demand models in smart cities

The general prerequisites of the TU Berlin Summer University are the following: at least one year of university experience + English level B2 or equivalent.

Prof. Dr. Massimo Moraglio
He is a senior researcher at the Technische Universität Berlin, working on technology and its wide effects on economic, social and cultural fields.
Massimo Moraglio is currently Academic Coordinator of the MBA “Sustainable Mobility Management” at TU Berlin and he has been visiting professor in Germany and Italy. He has been engaged as researcher and coordinator in European and national project regarding transport industry, final user’s attitudes and the future of mobility.
Dipl.-Ing. MBA. Hamid Mostofi
He is the researcher and Ph.D. candidate at faculty 1 of TU Berlin. He has experiences in the field of business analysis for urban infrastructure development and urban mobility as well as renewable energy development. He is the team member of GECI project at TU Berlin (Green Energy Center of Iran) which is defined by The Federal Ministry of the Environment (BMU).
He has the work experience in the field of teaching and preparing learning materials In the field of MBA courses in German universities Such as Sustainable Mobility Management MBA (TU Berlin) – MBA Renewables (Beuth Hochschule für Technik Berlin) and MBA&E (Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin). His current PhD thesis is System Dynamics modeling of rebound effects for Smart City Technologies on urban mobility.
