Cognitive Engineering

In this course, students gain skills and expertise in the field of human factors. First, the theoretical groundwork (human perception and performance, design principles, and trust in automation) is laid and participants gain first practical insights into complex socio-technical systems. Afterward, participants team up to put the theoretical foundation into the real world, examining typical challenges in human-automation interaction. The aim is to accomplish a holistic research process from the development of the research question to the presentation of the results. Thereby, the investigated technologies can vary broadly (e.g. humanoid robots, mobile applications, navigation devices, or websites).

Learning Goals & Syllabus

Learning Goals:

  • Fundamental knowledge about human information processing and action selection as well as accompanying limitations
  • Ability and common methods to analyze and optimize typical human factors problems
  • Understanding and applying evaluation methods for human- machine-interaction in the context of user-centered design


Course Components:

Week 1:

  • Fundamentals of Cognitive Engineering
  • Human information processing and action selection
  • Display design & usability
  • Human-automation interaction
  • Human-robot interaction
  • Joint specification of the research technology and question

Week 2:

  • Consolidation and Application
  • Selection of methods and conduction of the investigation
  • Social and ethical issues in human-machine Interaction
  • Demonstration and presentation of the outcomes
  • Various lab visits

You may find the syllabus useful when discussing with your home university whether the ECTS credits attainable for this course are accepted by them.

Please note this is a full-time, intensive course and participants will be expected to attend lectures (22 hours of class per week) and complete independent study Monday through Friday. Additional study may also be required on weekends. The activities of the cultural program are also shown in the syllabus.

    Target Audience

    This course is designed for current university students, working professionals with various non-psychological backgrounds (e.g. engineering, information technology, philosophy, sociology, etc.) without pronounced prior experience in human factors.


    Participants of the TU Berlin Summer & Winter University must meet the following requirements: (i) B2 level English, or equivalent and (ii) at least one year of university experience. Working professionals are also welcome to take part in the program.

    It is recommended for students to bring their own laptop to fully participate in the course.


    Tobias Rieger and Eileen Roesler are lecturers and researchers at the Chair of Work, Engineering, and Organizational Psychology at Technische Universität Berlin. In both teaching and research, the lecturers engage in the field of human-automation-interaction.

    Tobias Rieger's research focus lays on mechanisms of human information processing in both fundamental research as well as complex human-automation interaction.

    Eileen Roesler's research focuses on human-robot-interaction in multiple application domains, such as industrial, private, and commercial service.

    Course fees

    Course fees for Cognitive Engineering are as follows:

    Student: 950 Euro

    Working professional/Non-student: 1120 Euro

    The early bird discount is available for all participants until March 1st 2022.
