Health requirements

A requirement for being appointed as a civil servant is proof that you are in good health. That is why it is usually necessary to have an official medical examination after accepting your appointment. The official doctor is usually responsible (they are typically employed by the Health Agency in your place of residence).  The request for an examination is usually provided to you so that you can save time by making an appointment directly with the doctor.

For applicants residing abroad, it is possible to have this examination carried out by a local doctor after receiving your notification of appointment. For this, you must make sure that the German representation (embassy, consulate) instructs the doctor of your choice to carry out the set, required examination. A simple medical examination is not sufficient.

Determining suitability

The results of the official doctor’s examination must include the determination that you are suited for being a university instructor or which medical measures are necessary for you to be so. Further examination findings and details that are not relevant for your later employment as a university instructor are not provided to the university.

Validity of examination

The examination date must not be older than two months at the time the appointment becomes effective; for new appointees coming from abroad, no more than three months can have passed since the examination. Please note that there may be long waiting periods to get an appointment with the official doctor or to receive the documents after the appointment.

The official doctor will send the invoice for your examination directly to the TU Berlin. If you have the examination done abroad, you will be reimbursed for costs of up to 150€ if you submit your invoice. If it is medically indicated in exceptional cases, it is also possible to be reimbursed for additional costs. When in doubt, the responsible doctor can contact your HR team. The contact information can be found on your examination request form.
