Social insurance

You are waived from all branches of social insurance when you become a civil servant.

Medical subsidy

When you are ill, you typically can receive a medical subsidy from your employer (the TU Berlin) for the costs. This subsidy does not cover all (usually 50%) of the costs of illness or care needed, which means that you need to find health insurance that covers the other 50%.

Medical subsidy for family members

Under certain conditions, your family members can also receive the medical subsidy. Please inform yourself about the scope of the subsidy and the regulations with your private or statutory health insurance provider. Changes may arise due to the health insurance reform.

Health insurance

In order to cover the costs not paid by the medical subsidy, that is, generally “the other 50%,” you have two choices:

  • You can conclude a contract with a private health insurance company.

OR

  • You become or remain a voluntary member of a statutory health insurance company. That means that your health insurance company covers all reimbursable costs according to the set statutory limits. In this case, you are only eligible for the medical subsidy in exceptional cases. In contrast to employees who are not civil servants, you will also not receive any supplement to the premiums for a voluntary membership in the statutory health insurance.

Contacts

If you have questions, your HR team will be happy to help you. You can receive more information on the medical subsidy regulations from the Medical Subsidy Office in Berlin’s State Administrative Office.
