Information about Data Protection

Where does the university get my address data?

The addresses of graduates at the time of graduation were collected and saved by the university in accordance with the statutes on personal data collection and processing. These data were collected exclusively for the purpose of this survey and given to the coordinators of the project on removable media. The data which are in possession of the university may not be still valid in all cases one year after graduation, therefore the necessary updates were done with the assistance of the registration offices and the internet.

Why is the university allowed to use my address data for this graduate survey?

Address data may only be transferred and processed within the university for scientific purposes or in order to fulfil the tasks of the university. Both conditions are met within the framework of this graduate survey:

1.) The graduate survey at the university is part of a nationwide scientific research project under the coordination of ISTAT that encompasses 60 universities and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Within the framework of the nationwide cooperation project "KOAB". ISTAT is creating a complete dataset including the answers of all graduates of the participating universities and analyses the anonymized data exclusively for scientific purposes in the field of higher education and graduate research.

2.) The results of the survey are supposed to be used in the universities for the purpose of research and quality management in teaching and study. Saved address data will not be used for any purpose beyond inviting and reminding to participate in the graduate survey. Address data will be processed by employees of the university only. All employees who have access to personal data during the project are subject to current data protection laws. In this context, providing address data to third parties is strictly prohibited which is still valid even after these employees no longer work for the university.

What is the purpose of the access code?

Each graduate receives a randomly generated access code. With this code participants can access the online questionnaire (sufficiently protecting it from unauthorized access). Through the control of used access codes it is also possible to see who has already filled in the questionnaire. These graduates then will not receive further reminders (up to four contacts during the course of the survey are possible).

How is the online survey handled?

When participating in the online survey, log in to the Internet with your access code to participate in the anonymised online survey. The survey data are transmitted via an encrypted connection. At the end of the online questionnaire, you will be asked a) whether you are willing to participate in the follow-up study in 2 to 4 years and b) whether you are interested in a short summary of the research report. If you are willing to take part in the repeat survey and / or would like a short summary, you will be asked to enter your address data. Your address data will never be saved in a file together with your survey data. In this respect, the survey data are completely anonymous at all times during the survey. The TU Berlin uses your addresses exclusively for the purpose stated by the respondents (e.g. participation in the repeat survey, sending a short summary). The remaining address data will be deleted by the project staff responsible for the graduate survey at the TU Berlin after the study has ended.

ISTAT creates a cross-university overall data set that contains the details of all graduates from the universities involved in the project. These anonymized data are evaluated exclusively for scientific purposes in the context of university and graduate research and the corresponding results are published.
