International Research Projects

International networking is often promoted through research projects. The ZTG has successfully acquired EU projects in many subject areas; in some cases, long-term partnerships with European research institutions have developed. Beyond Europe, other agencies such as the BMBF (e.g. the megacity project Young Cities), the BMZ (Quian'an) and the Volkswagen Foundation (SUMRICA) approve projects that enable intensive cooperation with international partners. The SUMRICA project enables researchers from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Iran to spend several months at the ZTG. Furthermore, the DAAD projects in collaboration with Egyptian and Brazilian universities have enabled cooperation on the topic of sustainable consumption in recent years.

International Visiting Scholars and Researchers

The ZTG receives 10-15 international guest researchers annually, who are partly financed by international research projects, but also by individual fellowships. The length of stays range from a few weeks (e.g. for specific empirical studies or the joint development of a publication) to several years with the aim of completing a doctorate or as part of a postdoctoral stay. Geographically, the exchange focused on reasearchers from the MENA region (Iran, Egypt, Syria, Turkey) and Brazil, with Central Asia also currently gaining in importance.

Conversely, ZTG researchers regularly take advantage of the opportunities for shorter or longer stays at research institutions abroad. Some of these are research orientiert, others involve teaching contributions as postdocs or guest professorships (e.g.  Martina Schäfer at BOKU Vienna and at the Federal University of Parana (UFPR), Melanie Jaeger-Erben and Elisabeth Süßbauer at the University of Galway). In the field of science research, the DFG promoted the exchange with the GEMASS University in Paris with the aim of submitting a joint proposal.

International Events

The ZTG initiates or participates regularly in the organisation of international conferences, workshops and summer schools. As part of the interdisciplinary research training group "Microenergy Systems" funded by the Hans Böckler Foundation, the ZTG (2011, 2013, 2015) has repeatedly taken over the scientific coordination of the international MES conference, comprising of 250-400 participants from all over the world. In this regard, an international summer school with African universities was held in Dar es Salaam in 2015.

The international SOLIKON conference in 2015, with more than 1,000 participants from all over the world, enabled an exchange on solidarity approaches and projects. In addition to the Forum for Supportive Economy and Bread for the World, the ZTG played a leading role in organizing the conference.

Together with Fraunhofer IZM, the ZTG will organize the international conference "Product Lifetimes and the Environment" (PLATE) in September 2019 and act as a partner at the International Transdisciplinarity Conference (IDT) 2019 in Gothenburg.

International teaching

ZTG researchers participate in the development of international courses of study and regularly teach abroad. The ZTG has participated in a project funded by the German-Argentinean University Centre to set up a master's programme in "Urban Development and Transport Planning" at the University of Buenos Aires. Dr. Wulf-Holger Arndt regularly holds lectures at the El Ghouna research campus of the TU Berlin in Egypt. Prof. Schäfer has held lectures on sustainable consumption and sustainability marketing at the Federal University of Parana (UFPR) in Brazil, on the challenges and potentials of inter- and transdisciplinarity at the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT) and on sustainability innovations and new forms of cooperation at the University of Fortaleza (UNIFOR). She has also held a course on "Sustainable Consumption" at the German University of Cairo in Berlin. International teaching at the TU Berlin is also supported by ZTG staff. Several people are involved in the courses at the EUREF campus and, in some cases, have been involved with the Urban Management course from the very beginning.

Furthermore, doctoral theses at foreign universities are supervised by ZTG researchers (e.g. German University of Cairo, Federal University of Ceara UFC).
