Field test absorption chillers for combined heating, cooling and power systems (CHPC)

Description of the project

The advancement of energy efficient technologies and of combined heat and power generation (CHP, simultaneous generation of power and heat) are important elements of the strategies of the German government to enhance energy efficiency.

The generation of cold from CHP-Heat from cogeneration plants/district heating by a new generation of absorption chillers can contribute to this objective. The so-called trigeneration – combined heating, cooling and power (CHCP) – allows the use of summer surplus heat from CHP and the reduction of electrical peak demands caused by compression cooling plants at the same time.

The project “field test absorption chillers for combined heating, cooling and power systems (CHPC)” aims at optimizing a new type of absorption chillers developed by the institute for Mechanical and Systems Engineering at the TUB and its partners by a number of field tests at various locations in Germany. The chillers will be put to test and optimized in cooperation with the local partners (public utilities, companies). The results shall contribute to overcome the current barriers for a broader application of absorption chillers (operating and capital costs, resource efficiency).

Part of the project is a socio-technical accompanying research, performed by the Center for Technology and Society. It aims at analysing the aspects that promote or impede the diffusion and wider deployment of absorption chillers. Approaches from science and technology studies (multi-level-perspective, constellation analysis) allow an integrative view on the manifold social, technical, political etc. factors and interdependencies that may influence a fortified market dissemination and implementation of the technology.

The analysis covers the overall framework conditions of cool supply as well as experiences in selected field tests. Based on interviews with experts from the cold sector as well as with actors involved in the planning and implementation of field test plants (building owners, energy supplier, engineering and executing firms), and a socio-technical constellation analysis, barriers and bottlenecks as well as potential starting points for promoting interventions shall be identified. The results shall contribute to the development of recommendations and guidelines.
