Description of the project

The project’s aim is to conduct a cross-country comparison of different strategies to shift resource and CO2-extensive consumption habits towards sustainable lifestyles in Germany and Brazil. The scientific partners in the two countries have been dealing with different concepts and issues of analyzing consumption routines and interventions towards sustainable consumption during the last years. Since both countries are in a different state of their socio-economic development, a cross-cultural comparison can be very fruitful to draw conclusions about successful strategies and promising policies in early industrialized versus emerging countries. The underlying assumption for the exchange is, that differences in lifestyles, culture-specific practices and access to consumption goods have to be considered more prominently in designing an appropriate policy mix and intervention strategies for sustainable consumption in Brazil. Particularly a systematic comparison of the emergence of alternative practices and social innovations for sustainable consumption seems to be worthwhile since they have the potential to link environmental issues with an improvement of the quality of life and an empowerment of low income groups.
