Smart Sustainable District (SSD) Moabit West


The SSD is a European research project that endeavors to combine different aspects of a future sustainable city. The integration concept includes an intelligent use of resources focusing on social infrastructure, energy systems as well as water systems. The research project will be concentrated on 3 themes: Energy Efficiency Accelerator, Low Carbon Mobility and Sustainable Water Management. ZTG acts as the leader for theme Low Carbon Mobility.



Workshop on Integration of Bike-Sharing Systems in Company-Related Transportation


In the framework of the "Smart Sustainable District (SSD)- Moabit" project, the nextbike GmbH GmbH and the Center for Technology and Society (CTS) at TUB organized a workshop focusing on the upper mentioned topic. On February,16th 2017 a diverse group of stakeholders including authorities (the Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection, District Authorities of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and Steglitz-Zehlendorf), representatives of political parties (SPD), NGOs (VCD), Berlin Transport Authority (BVG), companies (BSR, AOK, mogool-Bikes, cargobike.jetzt, Team Red) and research institutes (TU Berlin, Innoz, German Institute of Urban Affairs-Difu) participated in the workshop. The potentials and challenges of using bike-sharing systems, E-bikes and cargo-bikes for company-related transports have been discussed with the participants. The workshop highlighted the benefits of such systems for the environment and personal health as well as possibilities of using them for medium distances and last-mile transports. On the other hand, the importance of communication with users and awareness-raising on these systems, integration of such systems in urban development plans, providing needed regulations and infrastructures (e.g. parking spaces), as well as relatively high cost of using such systems were identified as the main challenges that need to be addressed in future.

Project Description

Project description

The subproject "Low Carbon Mobility" in the Moabit West district of Berlin will explore whether and how future infrastructures for everyday-traffic in the urban district should look like. The middle till long-term goal is to reduce emissions through innovative public transport concepts, improved conditions or innovative improvements in infrastructures for pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

The topic "Low Carbon Mobility" is being worked on together with the Imperial College of London (ICL) and is part of the research activities within the European SSD project.

The research is focused mainly on an environmentally-friendly execution of the "last mile" in commuter-traffic and everyday-traffic of the local population, but also focuses on commercial transport.

Problem analysis

In the first phase of the project, a problem analysis has been performed. The first goal was to investigate the transport problems within the district in general. The second goal was to investigate the problems of public transport (public transport), problems during the entrance and departure to / from public transport and particularly problems in the pedestrian and bicycle traffic. For this purpose, preliminary studies such as the "SteK Green Moabit" have been reviewed and on-site inspections / mapping as well as expert interviews have been carried out. The central results have been prepared for so-called "hot-spot maps" and can be downloaded using the links below:

Solution generation

The application of a so-called co-creation process made it possible to integrate appropriate methods of solution generation in a reasonable way with each other.

Based on the problem analysis, a selection of different possible solutions has been made. In addition to the use of conventional methods, one focus of the solution-finding process also included the use of the so-called "Wisdom of the Crowds”. Here, the facts worked out in the problem analysis were, for example, presented to an interested group of people on a Climathon event (https://climathon.climate-kic.org/berlin), organized by the EIT Climate-KIC. In addition, two crowdmapping platforms were created with the aid of the Open Source tool "Mark A Spot" (https://www.markaspot.de/) (see picture). Here, local residents and commuters could post their ideas (proposals), comment on other ideas or, for example, suggest requirements for bicycles or stopovers for public transport.

At the same time, solutions were prioritized during a project-internal event with the help of experts and practice partners. These were then bundled into scenarios and their influence on the modal split (distribution of traffic volume on the available modes) was estimated. The scenarios are made up of the most promising measures which can be implemented in medium term and long term.

By means of the model approaches, the TEECT tool developed at the ZTG and the multi-agency simulation approaches applied by the ICL, the above-described scenarios and related measures with regard to their traffic and environmental effects (particle and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as noise emissions) were evaluated. The noise emissions, for example, were simulated in a three-dimensional environment (City GML), including the recording of floor-specific noise exposure.
