Mag. MSc. Ulla Tschida

Since December 2010 Ulla Tschida has been Research Associate of Sonja Palfner in the research project „E-science and its Interfaces” funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project analyses technical and institutional transformations within science and their implications on research on the basis of two case studies from the humanities (TextGrid) and climate research (C3-Grid).

From 2002 to 2010 Ulla Tschida worked on the development and the establishment of infrastructures and tools for managing scientific information at the Max Planck Society (refer to the websites www.zim.mpg.de and www.mpdl.mpg.de). Before she left the Max Planck Society, Ulla Tschida was head of the service management unit where she was responsible for the functional design and specification of web-based services and their sustainable operation. Her work focused on how digital tools could support or significantly influence concrete scientific research questions. The exchange with researchers and scientific staff on the functional and technical requirements for these tools increasingly raised the issue of social, cultural and economic transformations within the various scientific disciplines.

Ulla Tschida graduated in Comparative Literature from the University of Vienna and completed her Master of Science in Library and Information Science at the Danube University Krems in 2003.

Her main research interest concentrates on interactions of the society with the scientific community in the “Web 3.0”, with a special emphasis on the changing preconditions for the Humanities. What kind of qualitative modifications are implied by new interfaces between science and technology? On which modifications are the different types of “digital research infrastructures” reacting? What is the relationship between the quantitative and qualitative tools on the one hand and the epistemological character of the humanities on the other?
