Dr. Susanne Hofmann-Souki

In May 2020 I have joined ZTG as a researcher in the project "Intelligent Micrologistics". The project aims to support actors in rural areas in developing innovative solutions for the regional transport of goods in small quantities.

In my doctoral thesis at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin I already dealt with the challenges of small-scale local value chains in the organic sector. The starting point was the question of the interactions between the export-oriented value chains, which are often dominant in southern countries, and the evolving local systems.

After a short intermezzo at the European Commission I coordinated several international collaboration projects on value chains and rural development at HU Berlin. They have resulted in competence-oriented degree programmes and science-practice networks in Asia and Latin America. They help integrating current social challenges of rural areas into university teaching and research. The methodological basis is the establishment of transdisciplinary learning processes.

On a freelance basis I support actors in science and practice in the development and acquisition of participatory projects and in the reflection of innovations. In addition, I design interactive workshops and training courses on teamwork techniques, transdisciplinary methods, and mixed cultivation.

Main research areas and interests:

  • Impact pathways and leverage points for profound changes towards sustainability, e.g. in regional supply networks
  • didactics of experiential learning, and
  • the design of experimental spaces in change processes, e.g. in transdisciplinary projects
