Global Perspectives for Decentralized Energy Supply

At no other time in the last hundred years, has the global energy landscape changed as much as in the last decade; catalyzed by the debates on climate change and on the lack of energy access and accelerated by the breakthrough of large-scale renewable energy technologies. The latter are, however, only part of this transformation. Parallel there has been a rapid evolution of small decentralized approaches to energy access. This has not only opened up new perspectives for 2.8 billion people worldwide who cook and heat with solid fuel and 1.3 billion people without access to the grid but also led to a surge of interest in decentralized power among academics as well as entrepreneurs, investors and policy-makers.

 

The Research Group Microenergy Systems

TU Berlin has been a pioneer in exploring innovative forms of decentralized energy supply. In 2007, the interdisciplinary Research Group Microenergy Systems (funded by Hans Böckler Stiftung) at TU Berlin set out to explore different aspects of decentralized energy systems in both the Global South and North. In nine years of research on energy and development, we have seen fundamental paradigms challenged, innovative technologies emerging and new approaches scaling up, all of which will change the type and quality of energy services worldwide. In this process the Global South is becoming a learning case and testing ground for innovative approaches which are relevant for the Global North as well, e.g. smart metering and low-voltage DC-technologies.

The Way Forward

After two intakes of all together 15 PhD students, four international conferences and a number of publications, we would like to share our key findings with you and our view on current research trends. We also invite you to discuss with us how the competencies of different institutes can be connected to make research in the field of energy access and development at TU Berlin more visible and develop this focus further.
